8 Tips for Cleaning and Organization

Keeping our home and work environments clean, clutter-free and organized can be quite challenging as we each try to manage our busy daily schedules. Here are some tips to aid you in bringing order to your environment so that you can better manage your life.

1. Implement frequent, systematic light cleaning of each area of your home or work environment so a total overhaul of your work and living space is not necessary.

2. Do a chore or two each day (or tackle one room in your home each day) to minimize the feelings of being overwhelmed by housework.

3. Develop a list of tasks that need to be completed in your home and/or office and dedicate 15 minutes a day toward working on checking off each one. Set a timer each day if necessary and make sure you put some effort toward keeping order and organization a part of your everyday life.

4. Divide the responsibilities. Distribute tasks among everyone who lives (or works) in your home or office environment. If you live or work alone, you should be able to manage the mess you create. If you don’t live or work alone, then everyone should participate in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of your surroundings.

5. Avoid procrastination. Picking up objects and cleaning up messes you see should become second nature. If you do it as you see it, there will be much less to tackle at a later date, and you will be less likely to continue putting off the cleaning and organization of your home and/or office. Take ACTION to remove the stress on your life that procrastination creates.

6. De-clutter. Clutter increases the difficulty of cleaning. Get rid of any and everything that you don’t absolutely need in your home and office. If it is not currently helpful, useful or enhancing your life, throw it out or donate it to someone who could use it.

7. Sort and handle papers, mail, and email immediately upon receipt each day so you can instantly cut down on clutter in your home, office or inbox. The more you do it, the more peace and order you will bring to your life.

8. Find a system of organization that works well for you. Just because a certain system works for one individual does not mean it will work for another. Find a way of cleaning, organizing, and de-cluttering that works best for you. It will make it easier for you to get work done, check off items on your to-do list, and accomplish your goals and dreams.
